Posting Email Addresses

Here is a stupid question:

why do people posting email addresses using _AT_ or [AT] instead of just putting in the @ symbol. If people worried about spammers..what is the point they can still figure out the email....or is because some smart alec has invented a program to troll through forums and extract the any words with a @ in it?

digger, robots have trawled the internet for a long time doing just that.

Humans reading it has never been the problem...
