This is where I live, though the arrow points to the abandoned lot across the street instead of to my house. The driveway and house are fairly visible compared to those of houses around us because most have redwoods. We had a large walnut that got some tree disease, so now all we have is a couple of apple trees, a pear tree, a plum tree, an apricot tree, a lemon tree and an avocado tree (the avocado is mine, from a period where I tried to take cuttings or plant seeds of anything around and then try to bonsai it, but I decided to just plant the tree and it is getting big now). You can also see by the canoes on the river, not to mention the level of the water, that this picture was taken during the summer. I might even be swimming somewhere in that picture.
133.72 KB Here is my school, which I only include because I surveryed (I am not sure what the right verb is here) the school for the final in my drafting class after I chose to focus on civil engineering. I wish I still had the AutoCAD file somewhere so I could compare the satellite image to my rendition. Though I know mine looked very similar to that. Still, it would have been fun to compare. 135.26 KB And finally, the arrow points to the residence hall in which I will be living next year, and you can see most of the rest of the school in the picture. Hmm, for some reason I can't upload this last one. Maybe a limit of two per post? No, that isn't it. Well, I will get the last pic later when the upload service is functioning. |

You need to cut it down below 200K in size to upload.

Good thread!
Et voila: 127.06*KB I live in the north of Hoogkerk (the old part of the village). The 'big' city to the right of Hoogkerk is Groningen. The town southsoutheast of it is Haren, where I used to live (and my parents still do), in the east. My university is up north at the border of Groningen (below the white thingy). It's 20 minutes from my home to the university and downtown by bike.

And this is Kiel at the Baltic sea, northern Germany (or southern Scandinavia )
102.48KB Me lives under the yellow blop near the end of the fjord. "Downtown" is on the western side of the fjord, a good 10-minutes foot walk from my place. Kiel has also something olympic . The northern ellipse encloses the Olympic Sailing Harbour of 1972 at the Kiel Bay. (Olympic stadium however is in lederhosen-city ~900km south). There's nice beaches at both sides of the bay, from which you can watch the ships roll in [smoke] to the fjord, heading for the locks of the canal (other ellipse). The locks are sometimes really crowded, because ship crews simply love it: hey can slot in and pull out their big thing while showing it off to the land lubbers. Besides, they can spare some miles/time on the way to North Sea (and the occasional washhouse condition up in the Skaw). |

We are talking august right? You are in the middle of les Francofolies, one of the 3 major festival in Montreal (With the Jazz festival and Just for Laugh). It's all about French music and songs. Just go to the free shows and enjoy the crowd. For the rest, depends what you want to see. But Montreal is more an "Ambiance Town" like Orleans than a "Landmark city" like Washington. Nevertheless here are some tourist attractions : - On a clear day, the Olympic stadium is worth a visit. You can go in the tower and get a great view of the surroundings. - Montreal has a couple of nice churches that are worth visiting. - A walk in the old city is definitely worth it. - If you are into it there is a couple of museum about the history of the city. - If you are a John Lenon fan, you can go to the Queen Elizabeth Hotel where he had the bed-in when they composes « Give Peace a Chance » - If you are there on the 30th of july, there is the fireworks competition with a 30 minutes musical firework. - Finaly, there is the Casino If you go out and your girlfriend wants to practice her French, I suggest yo go our on St-Denis street where most French-Montrealers hang out more than St-Laurent, (English Montrealers) or Crescent (Tourists).

Here is A zoom in of East Rapid City.
128.54KB Green Dot is my house. Mauve circle is my office in the Physics building at the School of Mines. The southernmost circle is the lab where I spend a good portion of my life wishing I was somewhere else. 108.88KB This is a wider view of the area. You can clearly see "The Gap" which divides east and west Rapid. West Rapid is for those with Money, East is for the rest of us. "the Gap" is a hill barrier ~ 750 feet high. In the upper right you can see Elseworth Air force base, where they have some B-1 Bombers. The AFB is ~18% of our local economy and is slated for closure. WOOHOO. IMHO they should have closed it long ago. The Band along the top of the town is interstate 90. Rapid Creek is the small creek running right through the middle of town. It looks really small but it flooded in 1972 and killed ~250 people. The opened earth look off to the west is the Hills Materials quarry. They take rock from there and haul it all over the hills, and Western South Dakota, as well as wyoming and Nebraska. They seem to think that those states lack rock or something. Finally, the big poof of white smoke is from our lovely Power Plant that avoids EPA sanctions as it was grandfathered in. It produces 23MW of power, and pollutes similar to a brand new 500 MW plant.

Barbu thanks!
Weewho! Maybe I should pm you on this but we booked flights and picked up tickets for Coldplay (Section 112 which look like great seats). We are staying from Aug. 3rd through the 6th. A friend of hers went to uni in Montreal and recommended we stay at Hotel Sofitel so that is where we are staying. She also booked a restaurant that is supposed to be great for sushi (I think?...I was civving when she mentioned it so my attention span was not quite there. hehe) Anytime we travel we prefer the locals over the tourists so St-Denis sounds great. I've been to Quebec City twice and had a lot of fun so I'm looking forward to visiting your "ambiance" city! BTW I tried to copy the google map but I couldn't do it. How did you guys copy and paste the pics?
