Active Users - A few notes...

1) Lots of damn web robots trawling this place.

2) Just spotted a guest reading this page - Invalid Location. Cool huh?

There is a way I can hide the spiders, but it isn't trivial (I need to keep an updated list of them).

Why does it not show my OS as 98 when I'm in college which is correct but doesnt update to Xp when I look from home. Is it updating correctly? (Not that it matters much)

Active users is a really cool addition, now sir eric is looking in a 'Private forum'. Care to share with us what is that, because the ISDG forums I can see their name but not access them. This 'Private forum' sort of like 'GOTM Police forum or whatever it's called' at CFC?

Edit: ISDG forum gone, that must be it. Cheers

Whataboutthis?
<meta name="robots" content="noindex,nofollow"> ?

iirc - that ll keep em spider bots out...
guess you know already Anarres, but I ll just toss it in here anyway

besides - when people search for spam - whereelse could they go but here

anarres 26-01-2004 13:39

The idea is to not block spiders and bots totally - they actually do perform a service.

Now if only I could recognise just the email harvesters I would gladly block them...

Sorry for my ignorance (and I am not being sarcastic here ok !)
but what "service" do they actually perform and for whom ?

anarres 26-01-2004 14:03

One kind of bot indexes pages for search engines.

The other kind of bot is a 'harvester' - those are the evil ones that look for data to sell...

Okay, I see moderators and administrators, and atm 1 "vanilla" user, bootstoots. One of the moderators is puwen, who's only moderating his own subforum. Wouldn't you want to exclude the pbem moderators from that "moderator" category? Otherwise it's function would be somewhat obsolete, since there aren't that many active users here without their own subforum.

Just a thought.

anarres 26-01-2004 15:24

Yeah, that is part of a HUGE mod to the code to allow another moderator level.
