Game aborted: Hungry Beorn * Spoiler *
New game tomorrow morning. There's a bounty on my head.
The map is Shuffle so this is as likely to be an isolated start as a pangea brawl. Things I'd like to try:
Barring that, I'll pick the best looking prime numbered leader in the list. Things to be mindful of:
Beyond that, no game plan. Map comes first. |
This one will be cartoon-themed, starting with The Adventures of Asterix and the irreducible armorican village. If you don't know Asterix, you should. The old cartoon movies are timeless gems, especially The Twelve Tasks of Asterix and Asterix and Cleopatra.
The civs at hand are pretty swell: https://i.imgur.com/ADDm1wq.png Matrix has picked the Dutch, leaving 3 civs that tempt me: Arabia, Egypt (Hatshepsut) and Carthage. Financial is strong, Spiritual is really useful and protective might be vital for me this time around. I felt like playing Saladin for a while, so here we go. https://i.imgur.com/a9WwmOp.png Rich enough start - though it's hand-crafted so I expect everyone will look similar. Useless starting techs. Move NE, reveal nothing. Settle in place to keep river+fish. https://i.imgur.com/qEgYsnV.png I need to research Agriculture, Fishing and Masonry ASAP to improve, with archers and slavery also high up the priority list. No luxes and instant stone means the Pyramids are on the table again. https://i.imgur.com/peKOjC1.png And off Asterix goes into a new adventure. |
Brunch seems to have moved to a hill while ProPain and Stapel haven't claimed their civs. We're on pause waiting for the 2 of them and it gave me time to think.
https://i.imgur.com/2iovYCL.png If I open with a worker, he has nothing to do. Workboat-warrior-worker(size 2) seems reasonable, especially since I have really good dry tiles at 2F1H1C and 3H1C. To work anything else I need bronze for chops. Wheel means I can start roading towards city #2 when I have nothing else to improve. I'm full of forests so there is no possibility of any strategic resources in my fat 20. I also have no early lux to work with. A religion would be nice and since I'm the only guy with mysticism, I merely need to sneeze towards religions to get one. Either way I need a settler super fast for strategic resources. Depending on the terrain around, it means either fish-farm-bronze-poly or fish-farm-poly-bronze. Animals and masonry next. |

Quick and dirty 4 specialists @ size 6 on the hill, with chopped madrassa. Otherwise lackluster ; could slowly grow with grass cottages (up to size 10). Another argument for specialist economy and early pyramids. I did a few test runs with the same map settings and civs. Even though I alone start with Mysticism, I'd only get a religion half the time (if that) unless it was my 1st tech. Though I doubt it'll be that tight of a race with humans, there's no luxes so far and Arabia needs many extra techs just to get going. I can't afford to waste time on 2-3 extra religious techs but neither can I afford to stay at the 4 pop happy cap. So meditation after fishing ensures I get it without delay, then agriculture should arrive in time for a fished-up worker. Astérix will circle around to scout along the river southwards. Hopefully he can find a good spot for cottages. Gold and gems would be swell, too. |
As they say in football:

Turn 10
We got some gold from a hut https://i.imgur.com/qPwAnwj.png Soon we'll multiply fishes with holy words and fishing nets https://i.imgur.com/MOBm2P5.png Border expansion + a bit of fog-gazing revealed that my river is rather short to the South, and the sea shallow to the North. https://i.imgur.com/9iv0iR0.png https://i.imgur.com/1qaLEBR.png Possible international trade routes again, so GLH could be in the cards. As for Pyramids, they look more and more dubious as I spot not only gold, but wine and a long FP river to the East. https://i.imgur.com/M3U80AV.png I kindof have to get monarchy soon, which means HR for :), making pyramids>representation less valuable. It also means the religious tree - away from GLib and on towards Feudalism (would be a tempting oracle pick). My food options are somewhat lackluster insofar as specialist economy goes anyways. With gold and religion early, plus room for 2-3 solid FP-cottage towns, I like my prospects for regular cottage economy. No neighbors yet. Looks like I'm backed in a corner. Strategically, this also means that I need to claim terrain southwards. Next warrior will scout down there. Fast archers, too, to make use of the protective trait. Demographics don't reveal much except maybe that one guy has solid food tiles before even improving them - or rushed a work boat somehow. Probably size 2 wit 2 flood plains though. https://i.imgur.com/NLmfCJa.png |
Game aborted, admin password got shredded in the mail somehow. New game soon.

Sad.
I've had my share of IT problems the last week. Also sad. |
Maybe next time I'll be the one starting with silver or gold, for a change.
